Can acupuncture help with labour induction?

The acupuncture treatment aims to stimulate the release of beneficial hormones and decreases the release of other stress hormones which may be inhibiting labour.  Acupuncture is also aimed at relaxing tight muscles of the back, hip, and pelvic area.  Changing hormone levels and relaxing these muscles allows the baby to drop lower and fully engage.  The pelvic and supporting muscles are under a great deal of strain during the delivery so relaxing any tightness in advance may reduce the pain levels experienced and shorten the delivery time.

How long will it take?

This depends on what stage you are at when you arrive with us.  In our experience most women come in at 39 or 40 weeks, approximately 80% of cases take 3-4 sessions in 3-4 days, approximately  10% need fewer treatments, 5% need more treatments and 5% do not progress all the way to labour.

You do not need to wait until your due date, we can start treating you 3-4 days prior to this or sooner if there is a need to deliver early such as complications.  It is important to discuss early natural induction with your obstetrician so they can approve the plan based on the babies health and development.

Should you book an appointment and go into to labour that is no problem at all, we waive the short notice cancellation fee for all our labour induction cases, just give us a courtesy call or a text message. (no emails please, we won’t get the message in time).
